James Earl Jones, the actor whose voice was known around the world, went silent on Monday, September 9, 2024 he was 93.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Jones became a towering figure in American entertainment. He starred in an array of memorable films, including Coming to America, Field of Dreams, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, Clear and Present Danger, Claudine, and The Hunt for Red October. He was widely celebrated for his versatility and talent, described as “one of America’s most distinguished and versatile” actors, and often hailed as “one of the greatest actors in American history.”

Jones amassed nearly 200 screen credits throughout his prolific career and received numerous awards and honors. He won three Tony Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Daytime Emmy, and a Grammy Award. Jones was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1985 and was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 1992, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2002, the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009, and an Honorary Academy Award in 2011.

Jones’s distinctive, commanding voice has resonated across generations and continents. To Star Wars fans, he will forever be remembered as the voice of Darth Vader, and to millions of children, he is Mufasa, the wise lion king from Disney’s The Lion King.

Decatur, GA Unveils New Statue Honoring Civil Rights Legend John Lewis: A new monument dedicated to John Robert Lewis has been unveiled in Decatur Square, celebrating his extraordinary journey and lasting impact on civil rights.

Decatur, GA – August 28, 2024

On Saturday, August 24, a very large crowd witnessed the Decatur Square unveiling of a new statue honoring civil rights legend John Robert Lewis. This monument, crafted by renowned artist Basil Watson, replaces the Confederate obelisk that was removed from the square in 2020.

Organizations such as the Beacon Hill Black Alliance for Human Rights and Hate Free Decatur had been advocating for the removal of the monument since the fatal 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This monument was part of a broader national trend where such structures became focal points for demonstrations against police brutality and racial injustice, especially after George Floyd’s death in May of 2020 at the hands of Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin who now serving a twenty-one year prison sentence . Consequently, the city of Decatur requested a Georgia judge to mandate the monument’s removal, citing frequent vandalism and graffiti that had turned it into a public safety concern.

The new statue in Decatur Square is a tribute to John Lewis, the “Conscience of Congress,” celebrating his extraordinary journey and his lasting change in pursuing civil rights.

The statue pays tribute to Lewis’ enduring legacy of seeking “good trouble” and his lifelong dedication to freedom, justice, and equality. The unveiling ceremony was marked by speeches from prominent figures, including Georgia’s US Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, civil rights activist Xernona Clayton, and Ambassador Andrew Young. Dr. Rashad Richey, an award-winning talk radio personality, was master of ceremony for the event.

The monument resulted from four years of planning by the John Lewis Commemorative Task Force, which conducted a global search to find the right artist. Watson’s design reflects Lewis’ significant role in the civil rights movement, symbolizing his profound impact on the pursuit of equality.

John Lewis, born to Alabama sharecroppers, faced the harsh realities of segregation in the Jim Crow South. Inspired by figures such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr., he rose to prominence through his courageous activism. Notably, on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965, Lewis just twenty-five years old, played a pivotal role in the Selma to Montgomery marches, where he sustained a skull fracture during a brutal confrontation with law enforcement.

Despite these challenges, Lewis remained steadfast in his advocacy for civil rights, serving diligently in the U.S. Congress for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. His leadership extended beyond the Selma marches, encompassing participation in the Nashville sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, and the 1963 March on Washington. Lewis was a crucial figure in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and one of the historic march’s “Big Six” organizers.

His humble beginnings did not hint at the global impact he would achieve, yet his efforts have inspired countless individuals to confront and overcome adversity. The BronzeLens Film Festival (BLFF) is gearing up for its highly anticipated 15th annual event, which will take place from August 21-25, 2024, in Atlanta, GA. Known for showcasing the work of filmmakers of color, this year’s festival promises to continue its tradition of excellence while introducing exciting new elements.

Over the course of the five-day festival, BLFF will present nearly 150 films, including features, shorts, documentaries, international films, music videos, dance videos, and student films. These screenings will occur at the Tara Atlanta, 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road NE. In addition to the diverse array of films, the festival will offer more than twenty workshops and panel discussions designed to educate, inspire, and entertain attendees.

A new highlight of this year’s festival is the Inaugural BronzeLens Filmmakers Ball, dubbed the “Sneaker Ball.” Hosted by the Mayor’s Office of Film Entertainment & Nightlife, this festive event will debut at Atlanta City Hall on Saturday, August 24. This lively celebration honors the Atlanta and Georgia film community, featuring music, dancing, and a unique atmosphere that blends formal and casual elements.

Kathleen Bertrand, Executive Producer of BLFF, reflects on the festival’s evolution, “Each year we have been able to say that these films are the best we have ever seen. With stars like Jamie Foxx, Ben Crump, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Morris Chestnut as producers or executive producers, the quality of our selections is outstanding.”

When asked what goes into having a great film festival? “Having a talented and remarkable team is factor one, people that are dedicated and passionate about the work that we do. Factor two is having great films; we get submissions from all over the world because we appeal to stories created by and for people of color. We had films submitted from 59 countries. The decision to have a film at the festival gets harder each year because they all score so highly. Factor three is having great workshops. We have always strived to have activities, including workshops and panel discussions, that would educate, enlighten and also entertain. We have always known that we have to grow our film community.”

Bertrand also noted that the festival’s format has adapted due to external factors. “The pandemic led us to develop a virtual component, which has been running for three years now. This virtual aspect has broadened our reach, allowing us to showcase films globally.”

One significant change this year is the move of the Women’s Super Stars Honors Gala to March, a result of last year’s strikes. This adjustment elevated the gala to a standalone event highlighting women’s achievement. The change also paved the way for the new Filmmakers Ball. Both changes help to celebrate the film community in a fresh and engaging way.

The festival will culminate with the BronzeLens Awards Show at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center on the campus of Morehouse College. The center, named after the iconic musician and located at 900 West End Ave SW, features the 650-seat Emma and Joe Adams Concert Hall, among other state-of-the-art facilities.

Since its inception in 2009, the BronzeLens Film Festival has become a vital platform for filmmakers of color and has significantly contributed to Atlanta’s reputation as a thriving hub for the film industry. He then returned to the U.S. to serve full-time in the Army National Guard and took on a high school teaching and coaching position. Walz met his future wife, Gwen Whipple, also a teacher, while teaching, and the couple moved to Mankato in 1996. In Mankato, Walz helped coach the Mankato West High School football team to its first state championship and was the faculty advisor for the Gay-Straight Alliance.

His military career is noteworthy; he served 24 years in the Army National Guard, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in 2005. He transitioned to a political career when his students encouraged him to run for political office. Walz said, “his students saw in him what he was trying to instill in them.” He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota’s First Congressional District in 2006. Walz was re-elected five times, serving the district until he assumed the governorship in 2018.

The selection of Walz as Harris’s running mate is seen as a strategic move to bolster Democratic support in key Midwestern states. Harris and Walz are scheduled to embark on a campaign tour across the Midwest, starting Wednesday in Wisconsin and moving to Michigan. This tour aims to rally younger, diverse, and labor-friendly voters crucial to President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. However, recent tensions over Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict have led to some divisions among these voter groups, particularly in Michigan.

In a landmark electoral victory, Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has been elected as the Chief Executive Officer of DeKalb County, Georgia, becoming the first African American woman to hold this position in the county’s history. With 100% of precincts reporting, Cochran-Johnson secured 25,608 votes, or 60% of the vote, surpassing her opponent, former commissioner Larry John, who received 17,104 votes, or 40%.

DeKalb County, the third largest in Georgia with a population of 710,000, has seen a historic moment unfold as Cochran-Johnson steps into leadership. She follows in the footsteps of Liane Levitan, the county’s first female CEO who served two terms.

A native of Greenville, Alabama, Cochran-Johnson joined the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners in 2018, representing Super District 7.

Throughout her campaign, Cochran-Johnson emphasized a platform centered on change, accountability, and innovation. Key issues in her agenda included tackling DeKalb’s housing crisis, addressing gun violence, empowering youth, and supporting small businesses. Additionally, she has a business certificate from Harvard University.

With over two decades of experience in print media and mass communications, Lorraine is a seasoned grant writer who has secured millions in funding for state and local entities. As a parent, she has served as P.T.A. president for multiple schools, securing over $200,000 for school revitalization and donating $250,000 for COVID-19 relief. She supports initiatives in economic development, education, public safety, and homeownership.

Professionally, Lorraine has held significant roles at Creative Loafing Newspaper, founded Salons Unlimited Magazine, and was a founding member of United Front Media. She also served as General Manager of the Atlanta Daily World Newspaper and Associate Publisher of Who’s Who In Black Atlanta.

Willie Howard Mays, a titan of baseball whose Major League career spanned decades and impact transcended the sport itself, passed away peacefully at home, as confirmed by his son Michael Mays, in a statement released by the San Francisco Giants.

Born in Westfield, Alabama, on May 6, 1931, to Ann and Willie Howard Mays, Sr., Willie Mays began his illustrious baseball journey at a remarkably young age. By the time he was 15, Mays was already making a name for himself playing with the Birmingham Black Barons in the Negro Leagues.

Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. expressed the sentiments of the entire baseball community, stating, “All of Major League Baseball is in mourning today as we are gathered at the very ballpark where a career and a legacy like no other began.” He was referring to the game scheduled for Thursday, June 20, 2024 between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field, a tribute to Mays’ incomparable career.

Mays’ contributions to the game were vast and enduring. He emerged as a star with the New York Giants and later the San Francisco Giants, winning the National League most valuable player (MVP) in 1954 and leading his team to a World Series victory with his iconic “Catch” in the Polo Grounds. Mays earned numerous accolades throughout his career, including 24 All-Star selections, 12 Gold Glove Awards, and two MVP titles. In 2015, he was rightfully honored as one of the game’s greatest living players. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom later that year.

At the time of his passing, Willie Mays held the distinction of being the oldest living Hall of Famer, a title he inherited in 2021 upon the death of Tommy Lasorda. Shortstop Luis Aparicio, aged 90, now holds that honor.

Chairman Jeff Turner Delivers 2024 State of the County Address

Clayton County Celebrates Progress and Stability: Chairman Jeff Turner delivers final State of the County address, highlighting achievements, financial improvements, and community growth under his 11-year leadership in Clayton County, Georgia.

On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Chairman Jeff Turner delivered his final State of the County address to a capacity crowd. Captivating the audience with his unique and conversational delivery style, he highlighted numerous achievements and developments that have taken place under his leadership.

During his tenure, Clayton County witnessed the initiation and completion of several major capital projects. These included the construction of a new Public Safety Facility at Ft. Gilliam in Forest Park, the completion of Phase II of the Forest Park Street Scape Project, the establishment of a new fire station in Lake City, and the development of The Dubois Integrity Academy in Riverdale. Additionally, the county celebrated the opening of the Morrow Convention & Exhibit Hall and the City Center in Jonesboro. A notable accomplishment was the completion of the Spivey Splash Water Park, which is scheduled to open on May 25, 2024, and has already sold 1,000 annual passes.

Chairman Turner also emphasized significant financial improvements in the county. Turner stated that when he took office in 2013, the county had approximately $30 million in cash reserves, enough to cover one month of operating expenses. By May 2024, this figure had increased to approximately $160 million, covering five months of operating expenses. This fiscal prudence was further evidenced by the county’s finance department consistently receiving the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 44 consecutive years, a prestigious award from the Government Finance Officers Association.

In 2023, the board of commissioners approved a 3% cost of living increase for county employees and funded merit increases of up to 6.5%. They also secured $7.4 million in federal and state funds to assist homeowners in preventing foreclosure, as well as $6.4 million for emergency rental assistance, resulting in the dismissal of 1,174 eviction cases through the dedicated efforts of the Clayton County Magistrate Court and local nonprofits.

A new public safety housing allowance was instituted, providing stipends to encourage public safety officers to relocate to Clayton County. Turner, who took office on January 1, 2013, brought extensive experience from his 23-year career in law enforcement, culminating in his role as Clayton County’s first African-American Chief of Police.

Chairman Turner has deep roots in Clayton County, having lived there for most of his life. He graduated from Morrow High School and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Master’s in Public Administration from Columbus State University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Turner is married to Darlene Turner, and they have four sons. The family attends Greater Works Missionary Baptist Church in Forest Park, Georgia.

Chairman Turner’s address celebrated a legacy of progress and stability, marking a significant chapter in Clayton County’s history.

The event was attended by numerous supporters and officials, including Beverly Echols, a commercial realtor, and Rhonda Burnough, a representative from the Georgia House of Representatives, District 77. Both attended to congratulate Turner and acknowledge his contributions to the county’s development.

Clayton County’s population has grown significantly during Turner’s tenure, from 259,899 in 2010 to 298,300 in 2023. The median income increased to $58,325, with total households reaching 108,274 and employer establishments numbering 4,242.

The Council for Quality Growth hosted the State of Clayton County event. The Council, which advocates for those at the intersection of public policy and private investment, plays a crucial role in advising on regulations that balance community protection with economic development.
