As business owners, we spend a great deal of time focused on operations, customers, contracts, cash flow, technology, and growth. Those things matter. But after years in business, I’ve learned that some of the most valuable opportunities don’t come from a marketing campaign or a proposal.

They come from relationships.

Many of us can point to a conversation, introduction, mentor, or referral that changed the trajectory of our businesses. I certainly can. During my journey building Allied Logistics, some of the most valuable opportunities came not from advertising or cold calls, but from relationships developed through trusted introductions and professional networks.That is why professional networks matter.

Atlanta is one of the nation’s most dynamic entrepreneurial ecosystems. We have innovators, contractors, consultants, logistics firms, professional service providers, manufacturers, technology entrepreneurs, and community leaders building remarkable businesses every day. Yet many business owners continue to operate in silos, carrying challenges and pursuing opportunities without a strong network of peers around them.

My experience with ICIC’s Alumni Network (ICAN) reinforced something I have always believed: business growth is accelerated when entrepreneurs have access to a community that shares knowledge, resources, and opportunities. ICIC works to support business growth and inclusive economic prosperity through programs and initiatives that serve entrepreneurs across the country.

As an alumnus and member of the Atlanta Steering Committee, I have seen firsthand how meaningful connections can lead to collaborations, partnerships, mentorship opportunities, and long-term business relationships.

That is one reason I am excited about the upcoming 2026 ICAN Business Mixer, which will be held in Atlanta on Thursday, September 24 at 6:00 p.m. ET. The event is designed to bring together small business owners, ICIC alumni, and ecosystem partners for authentic conversations and meaningful relationship-building.

What I appreciate most is that these gatherings are not simply about exchanging business cards. They are about engaging with people who understand the challenges and opportunities that entrepreneurs face every day. They are about learning from others, sharing experiences, and discovering ways to help one another succeed.

Whether you are an established business owner, a growing entrepreneur, or someone seeking to expand your professional circle, I encourage you to invest in relationships. The return on that investment is often difficult to measure at first, but it can be transformative over time.
